VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
Volkswagen Golf - One of our favorite cars gets revised ... but there is nothing to worry about.
In just a few weeks, Volkswagen will launch the facelifted version of the seventh generation of Golf - but the makeover would be so simple that you may not notice at first glance. Great aesthetic changes or not, anyone in the market for a fun-to-drive economy cars still have to consider this one.
Golf has done consistently well in our tests and have made C/D 10Best cars list several times. We like Golf - though on the lineup has thinned and the torquey diesel has disappeared with the two-door body style. In 2017, Golf four-door only.
The base engine is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged I4, iron beams is a relatively new unit family owned machine EA888. It produces 170 4500 rpm horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm and mated five-speed manual or - like the car we drove-a six-speed automatic. While the powertrain is not very fast, friendly to use, and with virtually no turbo lag, very responsive.
With an estimated zero-to-60-mph sprint 7.5 seconds and the top speed is set at 125 mph (we measured 126 mph on the long term model 2015-test our car mechanically identical), he didn't come close, the sportier GTI has 40 more horsepower and just playing in another dynamically. Unlike the GTI, Golf emits a very quiet machine entry, but it doesn't sound really sporty.
We like automatic gearbox, a six-speed unit that changes the ratio is so fast that you could be fooled into thinking that the DSG dual-clutch transmission that is paired with an all-wheel-drive new available Golf SportWagen and Alltrack model. While it might be as good as get Automatics, we're partial to the slick five-speed manual that VW also offers.
Golf TSI is not very fast, but it's really satisfying to drive-no surprise given that he has been releasing fairly heavy compared to the previous generation, which was discontinued after model year 2014. MQB platform recently launched by 2015 to repair Golf Sport strut-type front suspension and multilink rear layout; This reassuring company, and Golf was a partner that is willing to even on challenging roads.
Electrically assisted power steering is well weighted and works with precision is fantastic, and the XDS system standard stability control function that applies brake pressure in the front wheel to coax the car into the corner — made the Golf feels more agile with minimal understeer. This is a great car to throw around, and feel more grown than most of its competitors in the segment.
The body structure is stiff and quiet, too, the complete machine is not disruptive. Combine this with the cabin and trunk that is much broader than you would think when looking at the outside, and a hatchback city friendly, really make long distance cruiser capable.
That said, Golf is a little frugal in many ways: it does not come with the drive mode selector, parking brake lever-operated unit is conventional and array empty empty replacement center console alerting the owner that it has skimped on the option. New Edition-for-2017 Wolfsburg package a little more teeth than a standard Golf basics: for an additional $1700, heated seats and a leather-like vinyl-coated fabric, rather than there are keys to closeness and push-button start, 16-inch aluminum wheels replace the 15-inchers and got the strength of the roof. In addition, some of the latest AIDS drivers in attendance, including forward-collision warning, emergency braking assist and blind spot detection system that is truly useful.
Cabin Golf impeccably constructed, and attention has gone into every detail is quite impressive. Backlit switches, trim faux-aluminum console looks and feels real, and infotainment systems graphics from fitting into interior design themes and the instrumentation — a rare thing in this class.
If your idea of the Premium is a box full of bells and whistles, then Golf may not be for you, though it's still a lot of packages simple things note price of $20.715. But if the premium means the right and driving experience of top-class and more of a sense of Audi-like handling and craftsmanship, then this little hatch remains the most premium in the segment.
